with the fear that the worst may be yet to come. and i'm joined by wolf blitzer in jerusalem, also here with ben wedeman and arwa damon. yesterday you were at the scene of probably what was then the most controversial attack, on a strike what israeli forces said was owned by a hamas official, a commander of an artillery unit. they said initially he had been killed and they stepped back from that. a number of members of a family, at least nine members of a family, were killed. what was the scene like? >> reporter: it was very intense. there was a lot of anger. there was a lot of frustration. and there was also a certain sense of resignation. people here have been through this before. and they fully expect to have to go through it once again. people were frantically digging through the rubble. some of them were even using their bare hands screaming for shovels, for anything they could possibly find. they were hoping to find survivors, but, of course, we now know that was not the case. >> reporter: we've got some of your report. let's play that. >> reporter: the large slab of concrete and mangled m

with no letup in sight. anderson cooper is in gaza city, anderson cooper is in israel. -- wolf blitzer is in israel. >> israel has said that the israeli air force struck more than 120 targets on sunday in gaza. most notably, the house of a -- the hamas the head of a hamas rocket unit. initially say had said they killed that man. they can't verify whether or not they did -- the local ambulance crews said that as many as ten civilians, women and children were inside the house at the time. the israelis do acknowledge that this man's family was in the house at the time. but they cannot confirm if he was there. israeli -- hitting some local journalists, they had called up some french journalists in advance of the strike, and told them to get out of the building, and they did evacuate, but some journalists did go back inside. there was a response to that, there's been a number of large explosions already this evening and we an fticipate in the hour ahead. >> what's the feeling you get of the atmosphere right now when you see people in gaza and you know it's going to be another long night the

if the rockets don't stop falling. our chief political anchor wolf blitzer has more on israel's iron dome defense system now. >> the iron dome is really a very successful program so far. it's only been in business now for a little more than a year. but the israelis have come up with this anti-missile, anti-rocket system where they get word of what's coming in and they launch, this iron dome goes into action. if it's aimed at a populated area, a city, or a strategic target or a significant political target, it can go up and knock down and destroy that rocket or missile in midair. it's sort of like the old patriot anti-missile system as a lot of us were familiar with in u.s. wars over the past couple decades. this is designed for short range rockets and missiles, if you will. and it's got about, israelis say so far, it's got about a 90% success rate. they have been using it pretty successfully. problem is there's been about 1,000 rockets and missiles that have come into israel from gaza since last wednesday when this crisis really escalated. every time they get word of a rocket or missile coming in

. cnn's wolf blitzer hasn't been far from the violence. wolf, you were in a private home, talking to the family when the warning sirens went off. what happened next? >> reporter: well, i got to this house, carol. and the sirens had gone off. and there was a nice residential area, quiet area. when you get to the house all of a sudden you see the destruction. i spoke to the father, the mother, four kids. and they got about 30, 40 seconds, sirens went off. in almost every house in israel they have a safe rook room, which is really a concrete closet, if you will, that they can stay in there during shelling. fortunately they all went in there and survived. you wouldn't believe the house. we just got back and took, obviously, good pictures of what was going on. we interviewed the parents. the house is basically destroyed. had they not been in the safe room they would all be dead. to see up close what's going on. within a few minutes we have gone to one of these command centers, emergency center where they deployed ambulances and we were in the command center. they let us in there to wat
